The tone of The Joy Luck Club is respectful, sorrowful, and reminiscent. The stories of Suyuan Woo, Rose Hsu Jordan, Lindo Jong, and Ying-ying St. Clair tell of their experiences from the past. Their daughters are respectful of their heritage and in fact, at times think that they know much about their Chinese heritage. The mood is sorrowful at times, especially when Suyuan passes unexpectedly.
