Personal Reflection

At first, I had trouble picking a book for this summer reading. But one of my friends recommended The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan so I decided to read it. As always, I found the beginning to be a bit boring and dry. It took me a while to finish a couple of pages since I kept putting off the reading. But as I read more, I slowly began to like the book.
I really enjoyed this book because in some ways I could relate to the situation. I'm a Filipino immigrant. Before I came to America, I was very fluent with my language. However as time passed by and I exercised English more than Tagalog, my native tongue, I slowly began to forget how to speak it. Sometimes, I get into arguments with my parents because like the daughters, I felt like my parents were preventing me from becoming an independent individual.
I would definitely recommend this to others. This book can relate to teenagers and mothers who are struggling to understand each other. It is also an enjoyable and entertaining read.
I've learned a lot from this summer reading project. I actually learned how to build a website and how to code the html. I also learned life lessons. Looking at the mother's perspectives, I've come to appreciate the things my mom does for me more. I've become more open to her suggestions and I've become less bratty. Reading this book was definitely a win-win situation for me. :D
