Conflict

Several conflicts are presented in The Joy Luck Club. The Chinese-immigrant mothers try to instill their daughters with knowledge and understanding of their Chinese heritage and also try to shield them from the traumatizing pain and troubles they felt when they grew up in China. However, the daughters see their mothers attempts as futile and meddling. Because of this, there is a constant struggle to understand between the mothers and daughters.
The mothers and daughters also have a hard time trying to find out who they really are. The mothers try to connect and mix their Chinese pasts with their American presents while the daughters try to balance their American ways and Chinese heritage.
